This is very popular in Mangalore for its flavor and taste. People flock the restaurants for eating tava masala/pan fried fish. Its healthy as you can regulate the oil you are adding yet you can enjoy tasty fish masala.
4 steaks (2 lb) of King Fish
1table spoon ginger garlic paste
2 tablespoons Kashmiri chilli powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoons coriander powder
tamarind small marble size
2 teaspoons coriander leaves finely chopped
few curry leaves
salt to taste
Soak the tamarind in water, and remove the pulp. Mix all the ingredients with tamarind pulp. Apply the thick masala to the fish pieces. Marinate for 2 hours.
Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a pan. Add curry leaves to the pan fry for a minute. Fry the fish fillet on low fire and add few spoons of water to the pan. Cover the pan and cook for few minutes. Flip the fish and fry it on the other side. Add few spoons of oil. If the masala is becoming very dry add few spoons of water. Take care not to burn. It takes about 7-10 min to pan fry the fish depending upon how thick the piece is. While serving add lemon juice to the steak. This goes well with dal and rice.
